Browser games without download: how GTA, Half-Life, and Quake run in a tab (list with 35 links)

In October 2026, a list of famous games that run directly in the browser went viral on X. The post from the @RadiantOpti profile, dated October 8, showed Black Ops, Skate 3, Halo, and Modern Warfare 2 running in a tab, without installing anything, and garnered millions of views. Two days earlier, a port of GTA V for the browser had gone live at playgta5.com and was taken down within hours. Kotaku, Gizmodo, and Tom's Hardware covered the story.

The version of the list that circulated most widely here has 35 addresses. We checked them one by one on 10/13/2026: what each site is, what technology it uses, where the game files come from, and if it has aggressive ads. First, how this works. Then, the complete list, separated by risk level.

It's Not Cloud Gaming

In cloud gaming, like GeForce NOW and Xbox Cloud Gaming, the game runs on a data center computer. The image is compressed into video and sent to you, and your commands make their way back. You are watching a video that responds to your input.

In browser ports, it's the opposite: the game code runs on your processor and graphics card, within the tab. Only the files come from the internet, which are stored in the browser. That's why some even work offline after the initial load, and why performance depends on your computer, not your internet speed.

How a Windows Game Ends Up Inside a Tab

A finished game is an executable: machine code made for Windows or a video game console. The browser doesn't run that. The path to the tab has three stages.

1. Decompile: The Way Back

Decompiling is transforming the executable back into source code that a person can read, usually in C or C++. In the most rigorous fan projects, each reconstructed function is compared with the original until it generates exactly the same bytes. It's slow work: GoldenEye 007, from the Nintendo 64, took nine years to reach 100%. re3, which reconstructed GTA III, started in 2018 and only finished in 2020.

2. Compile Again, Now for WebAssembly

With the source code in hand, it can be compiled for another platform. In the browser, this platform is the WebAssembly: a binary format that the four major browsers have supported since 2017 and which became a W3C standard in December 2019. It runs close to the speed of an installed program and is isolated in the browser's sandbox. Since September 2025, with WebAssembly 3.0, it can also use more than 4 GB of memory, which has opened up space for large games.

The most used tool in this stage is Emscripten, which compiles C and C++ for WebAssembly and already translates OpenGL calls to WebGL.

3. Swapping Parts: Graphics, Sound, Control, and Save

The original game communicated with Windows. In the browser, each part is replaced by a web API:

  • Graphics: WebGL, the oldest, or WebGPU, which arrived in Chrome in May 2023, Firefox on Windows in July 2025, and Safari in September 2025. WebGPU was designed on modern APIs (Direct3D 12, Metal, and Vulkan) and is what enables current PC game graphics.
  • Sound: Web Audio and AudioWorklet.
  • Control: Gamepad API for control and Pointer Lock for the mouse in shooter games.
  • Save and files: IndexedDB and OPFS, a private file system for each site, stored within the browser.
  • Multiple processor cores: Web Workers with SharedArrayBuffer, which only work when the site sends COOP and COEP isolation headers.
  • Multiplayer: WebSocket, WebRTC, or WebTransport.

Static Recompilation: The Shortcut

There's a path that skips manual reconstruction. Static recompilation translates the original machine code all at once, before playing, and generates a new program. This is how N64Recomp brought Zelda: Majora's Mask to PC in 2024, and how XenonRecomp did the same with Sonic Unleashed, from Xbox 360, in 2025. It's different from emulation, which mimics the entire video game in real-time while you play. In the list below, Binding of Isaac, PES 6, and Pepsiman use this technique.

Where AI Came In

Much of this list is years of human work, predating the AI wave. The first Quake 3 in the browser (QuakeJS) is from 2013, Diablo from 2019, re3 from 2018 to 2020, and the manual decompilation of LEGO Island began in 2023.

What changed in 2025 and 2026 was speed. In December 2025, programmer Chris Lewis reported that, using Claude Code, the decompilation of Snowboard Kids 2 (Nintendo 64) went from 25% to 45% in about two weeks. On October 9, 2026, Maurice Heumann reported having left AI agents working on a shooter game until 99% of the functions were reconstructed, 83% of them byte-for-byte identical to the original; the code was not published, so the result was not verified by third parties. Pieter Levels claims to have ported Return to Castle Wolfenstein to the browser in an hour with AI assistance, and the author of the Binding of Isaac port also credits an AI model.

However, in the case of GTA V, which sparked the wave of headlines, no one proved that AI was involved. The fairest statement is this: AI is accelerating the final stretch of work that fans spent years building.

Inside GTA V

The GTA V port is the most extreme case, which is why it's worth seeing how it was put together. After playgta5.com went offline, a mirror with the same build continued to circulate. We analyzed the loader, the file list (manifest), and the file headers, without running the game:

  • The entire engine is a single file, game.wasm, of 63.2 MB, compiled while downloading.
  • It runs in a Worker, outside the tab's screen-handling part, and draws on an OffscreenCanvas. Before starting, the loader creates two workers: one solely for the graphics card (WebGPU) and another solely for reading files.
  • The game data, 5,814 files and approximately 21 GB, resides on the server and arrives on demand. For the first screen, the loader pre-fetches a list of initialization files. In a published analysis, about 743 MB were downloaded before the world appeared.
  • Saves are stored in the browser's IndexedDB.
  • According to Satyajit Ghana's technical analysis, Direct3D 11 calls become commands that the worker reproduces in WebGPU, with 4,919 shaders converted and 4,808 usable. The engine runs with 75 threads and uses WebAssembly 3.0's 64-bit memory.

The manifest also shows files from a development tree, not from the game sold in stores: an internal bug list (bugstar.xml), 669 files in a folder called non_final, and test levels like env_test. This aligns with leaked material from Rockstar, whose GTA V source code circulated in December 2023, but it doesn't prove its origin. For this reason, and due to Monetag's popunder ad on the mirror, GTA V is in the high-risk group on the list.

The complete list: 35 addresses checked on 10/13/2026

Status, technology, and file origin checked on 10/13/2026. These sites change daily: some go down, others change ownership. We've separated them into three groups, from safest to riskiest. These are third-party projects, unrelated to Lee Sugano or the game-owning companies.

Free or requiring your own game (10)

  • Quake 1 / QuakeWorld: q1.pieter.com. Open FTE QuakeWorld engine in WebAssembly, with the official shareware version and multiplayer. Works on mobile. Asks for notification permission on opening; you can decline.

  • CS Surf: surfd.net. Clone made from scratch of Counter-Strike: Source surf movement, with community maps. Desktop only.
  • Hedgewars: github.com/apmlabs/webwars. Port of Hedgewars, an open-source game, to WebAssembly. The original address, webwars.link, was pointing to another server on 10/13, so the link goes to the project, with instructions on how to play.

Work, but use original game files (13)

These sites host game files that are owned and may go offline at any time. None had aggressive ads on the day of checking.

  • Quake 2: q2.pieter.com. FTE engine with the official demo, plus full game deathmatch maps. Multiplayer and mobile.
  • LEGO Island: isle.pizza. Web version of the open-source isledecomp decompilation, with multiplayer and save editor. Hosts 1997 game data (approx. 550 MB). Works on mobile.
  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein: rtcw.pieter.com. Open iortcw engine ported with AI assistance, with full game data (approx. 380 MB on first access).
  • Half-Life: pixelsuft.github.io/hl. Xash3D engine in asm.js, the generation before WebAssembly, with full Half-Life and Opposing Force. Valve already requested removal of this author's pages in 2023.
  • Counter-Strike 1.6: csjs.live. Xash3D engine in WebAssembly, connected to real servers. Downloads approx. 430 MB of Valve data. Works on mobile.
  • GTA Vice City: joncodeofficial.github.io/gta-vice-city-wasm. Based on reVC, the reverse engineering of Vice City. The page says you need your copy, but the download button provides the game (approx. 700 MB). Take-Two took down another browser version in December 2025.
  • The Simpsons: Hit & Run: shar-wasm.cjoseph.workers.dev. PC version port made, according to the author, from code leaked in 2021. Data arrives in blocks as you play.
  • The Binding of Isaac: Repentance+: tboi.online. Static recompilation of the Windows executable, with 54 MB of WebAssembly. Hosts the game and paid DLC; the site says you need to own the game, but it doesn't check.
  • Black Ops 1 Zombies: vel.gg/bo1z. Open KisakBlack reimplementation in WebAssembly with WebGPU, with zombie maps. Downloads nearly 900 MB of Activision data per map. Desktop only.
  • Nacht der Untoten (World at War Zombies): zombies.bitcoinsapi.com. Fan remake in Three.js of the first zombie map, with 2-4 player co-op and original sounds. Desktop only.
  • Modern Warfare 2: ovz-game-production.up.railway.app. 2009 multiplayer reimplementation in JavaScript with WebGPU, reading original maps (approx. 368 MB). Anonymous author.
  • Crash Bash Online: crashbash.app. Unofficial port of the PlayStation 1 game in Babylon.js, with online rooms. Works on mobile.
  • PES 6: pes6.optijuegos.net. Static recompilation of the PSP version, with online. Has Google ads, and the author's main site distributes pirated software: play on the port page and don't download anything from there.

Offline or high risk (12)

Attention before clicking: these addresses were offline, redirecting to unknown domains, or full of aggressive ads on 10/13/2026. They are included here for completeness, not as a recommendation. If it opens, do not download anything, do not log in, and close any tabs that open automatically.

  • GTA V (playgta5.com): copy on Internet Archive. The site went live on 10/06/2026 and crashed within hours; today it asks for a password ("Private test build"), and the archived copy only preserves the page's shell, without the game working.
  • GTA V (mirror): gta.deloskiyt.pl. Same build as playgta5, online, with a Monetag popunder ad (opens another tab when clicked) and development data with signs of a leak. Requires a computer with WebGPU and a lot of memory.
  • GTA III: wasmarcade.com/gta3. Uses re3, but the portal opens popunders, notifications, and a "sponsor" tab when you press Play, hides these ads from bots, and also serves pirated ROMs.
  • Minecraft 1.8.8: wasmarcade.com/minecraft. It's Eaglercraft, subject to Mojang notifications since 2023, on the same aggressive ad portal.
  • GTA Chinatown Wars: gta-chinatown-wars.pages.dev. PSP emulator that automatically downloads a 904 MB pirated ISO. The ISO server was overloaded that day, and the game didn't load.
  • Black Ops 3 Cheese Cube: cheese-cube.pages.dev. The address now redirects to an unknown domain with "captcha." We do not recommend opening it.
  • Kino der Toten: kino-der-toten.pages.dev. The project went offline, and the address performs the same suspicious redirect. We do not recommend opening it.
  • Moon (Black Ops Zombies): moon-zombies.pages.dev. Same suspicious redirect. We do not recommend opening it.
  • Black Ops 2 (Vibe Slops): vibeslops.luckeysystems.com. Recreation made with AI agents. Activision sent a copyright notice, and the page today only shows the author's warning.
  • Skate 3: skate.aaddpp.lol. Proprietary engine in Rust with EA game data (approx. 375 MB), requires WebGPU. The donation button leads to a speculative cryptocurrency.
  • Skate Rust: global-terror.net. The game only opens for paid subscribers of a store that charges for access to third-party material. We do not recommend paying.
  • Pepsiman Recompiled: pepsiman.ol.mr. Static recompilation of the PlayStation 1 game that asks for your disc. It was offline (Cloudflare error).

How to play without falling for scams

Free games are an old bait: between April 2024 and March 2025, Kaspersky counted over 19 million attempts to distribute malicious files disguised as popular games, with GTA leading at almost 4.5 million. Before opening any link from the list:

  • The real game runs inside the tab. If the site asks you to download an .exe, install an extension, or a "launcher", close it.
  • Do not log in with your Steam, Rockstar, Epic, or Microsoft account on these sites.
  • Do not pay anything to "unlock" a game.
  • Decline notification requests.
  • Did another tab open by itself? It's an ad. Close it without clicking anything inside.
  • Use an updated browser. WebAssembly's sandbox isolates the game, but it doesn't protect against phishing, malicious ads, or files you download yourself.

In most cases, there is no authorization from the game owners. In Brazil, computer programs are protected by Law 9.609/98, and using a protected work depends on prior authorization from the author (Law 9.610/98, art. 29). Art, music, and characters are also protected.

Abroad, companies have taken action multiple times. Take-Two took down re3 and reVC in 2021 and sued the authors, a case that ended in a settlement in 2023. In December 2025, they took down the browser version of Vice City from DOS Zone, even with the requirement of an original copy. In September 2026, Rockstar published rules prohibiting modifying its games to run on platforms where it has not officially released them. Mojang has been sending notices against Eaglercraft since 2023, and Activision took down Call of Duty recreations in October 2026.

Sites that require your own game or use free versions are the safest path. This text is not legal advice.

What this says about the browser (and your company's system)

If a tab can handle GTA V with 75 threads and modern graphics card rendering, it can easily handle your company's calendar, inventory, budget, or dashboard. These are the same technologies: WebAssembly for heavy computation, WebGPU for graphics, local storage for offline functionality, and WebSocket for real-time updates.

In practice, a well-made web system runs on any computer or mobile phone, without installing anything, without depending on an app store, and with a single version to update. If you're wondering about this, it's worth reading responsive site or app: what's best for your company.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download anything to play in the browser?

You don't need to install anything. The browser downloads the game files and stores them in the site's own storage, sometimes hundreds of megabytes the first time. If a site asks you to install a program, extension, or launcher, it's a sign of a scam.

Is playing in the browser the same as cloud gaming?

No. In the cloud, the game runs on a server, and you receive a video stream. In the browser, the code runs on your computer, using your processor and graphics card. Only the files come over the internet.

What is WebAssembly?

It's a code format that all major browsers have understood since 2017 and became a W3C standard in 2019. Programs written in C, C++, or Rust can be compiled to it and run close to the speed of an installed program, isolated within the browser.

Does it work on mobile?

Some do, like Quake, Urban Terror, Red Alert 2, LEGO Island, Counter-Strike 1.6, and Halo CE Mobile, with on-screen controls. Heavier ones, like Black Ops, Generals, and GTA V, require a computer with WebGPU and plenty of memory.

Can these sites transmit viruses?

The game itself runs isolated in the browser's sandbox. The risk lies around it: pop-under ads, redirects to unknown domains, and requests to download files or log in. That's why the list separates clean sites from those with high risk.

Did AI make these games run in the browser?

In part. Most ports rely on decompilations and open-source engines that fans have been building for years. In 2025 and 2026, AI agents began to accelerate this work, and some authors claim to have used AI, as in the cases of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Binding of Isaac. For GTA V, the use of AI has not been proven.
